Pop art burst onto the scene in the late 1950s. It took inspiration from the bold, colourful imagery of the new consumer culture, which reflected the optimism and affluence of the post-war generation.
We’ve been collecting pop art since the late 1960s and our collection is now one of the finest in the UK outside London, with works from some of the most influential pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Peter Blake, Roy Lichtenstein and David Hockney.
All these — and more — can be seen in our dedicated Pop Art gallery.
This retro-themed, interactive space provides the perfect backdrop to explore the world of pop art, with its vibrant mix of popular culture, social commentary, nostalgia, kitsch and celebrity.
Every six months, the display of the gallery changes to reflect a different theme found within the pop art movement, so repeat visits are encouraged!
