I Love Warhol: Andy Warhol 1971 Interview on Comic Books

Interviewer: “Do you ever bother to read about these great interpretations about your work? Back in 1961 or 1962, similar artists worked very independently but evolved the same attitude. Does it seem odd to you that you all looked at the world in the same way?”

Andy shares his thoughts on reading a lot of comic books and it “just happened” to come out as it did.

ANN B’S SCREEN TEST BY ANDY WARHOL | Revolver Gallery

Between 1964 to 1966, Andy Warhol shot over 500 silent, slow-motion films on 16mm black-and-white portraits depicting the lives of popular individuals who frequented the factory, including Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Rufus Collins, Edie Sedgwick, Allen Ginsberg and Nico. Warhol’s films were motivated by his fascination with individuals and his desire to capture the actual experience of living.

Ann Buchanan was not a regular Warhol superstar, but was connected to the art world through poetry. Ann follows Warhol’s instructions throughout the entire screen test, as she stares directly at the camera without blinking, until tears begin to fall first from her left eye, and then from her right eye. This screen test is also referred to as “Ann B, The Girl Who Cried a Tear”.

Andy Warhol, Screen Test: Ann Buchanan, 1964, 16mm film, black and white, silent, 4 minutes at 16 frames per second.

DENNIS HOPPER’S SCREEN TEST BY ANDY WARHOL | Revolver Gallery

Between 1964 to 1966, Andy Warhol shot over 500 silent, slow-motion films on 16mm black-and-white portraits depicting the lives of popular individuals who frequented the factory, including Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Rufus Collins, Edie Sedgwick, Allen Ginsberg and Nico. Warhol’s films were motivated by his fascination with individuals and his desire to capture the actual experience of living.

Dennis Hopper was an American artist specializing in photography, acting and filmmaking. Hopper was a huge Warhol fan, as one of his first purchased art works was an early print of Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans. In 1964, Hopper did three screen tests at the Factory: ST153, ST154 & ST155. In his screen tests, Hopper doesn’t sit still and is found smoking a cigar at the end of the video, but in each it is clear how Warhol manipulated light during his screen tests and tried to show the individuality of Hopper.

Hopper on his screen tests: “I was in another film that Andy did called The 13 Most Beautiful Boys in the World… Andy just told me the title and turned on the camera and walked away… Being the egomaniac that I am, I sat there and did a Strasbergian emotional memory”.
