Gimp Tutorial: Pop Art

Please comment and rate videos – this will help other people find them by ranking them higher…it takes a second 🙂

Requested by Jadesdaddy1999.

How to produce Roy Lichenstein style Pop Art from your photographs.

This is based on several Photoshop tutorials, but is ‘translated’ for the Gimp, which doesn’t have the ‘new adjustment layers’ or ‘filters-sketch-halftone’ options that the Photoshop tutorials rely on.

Handy shortcut keys:
ctrl+m = Merge all visible layers
[ = brush decrease size
] = brush increase size
p = paintbrush tool
shift+e = eraser tool
o = eye-dropper/colour picker tool

Remember to save your project as an .xcf file as you go along, in case you lose your work.

Andy Warhol – American artist – Pop Art Painter Photogerapher

————————————————
Andy Warhol (August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987) was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s. After a successful career as a commercial illustrator, Warhol became a renowned and sometimes controversial artist. The Andy Warhol Museum in his native city, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, holds an extensive permanent collection of art and archives. It is the largest museum in the United States dedicated to a single artist.
———————————————————————
Contemporary art galleries are often established together in urban centers such as the Chelsea district of New York, widely considered to be the center of the American contemporary art world. Most large urban areas have several art galleries, and most towns will be home to at least one. However, they may also be found in small communities, and remote areas where artists congregate, e.g. the Taos art colony in New Mexico and St Ives, Cornwall; Hill End, Braidwood and Byron Bay in New South Wales Contemporary art galleries are usually free and open to the public, however some are semi-private, more exclusive, and by appointment only.

Elizabeth Sutton: Pop Art Princess – Pro Perspectives – Episode 3

House Tipster features Elizabeth Sutton, a New York pop artist, in its ongoing Pro Perspectives series.

Elizabeth first became a full-time artist in February 2016 when she was approached by Ryan Serhant, New York City’s #1 real estate broker, about putting her artwork in one of his high-end developments.

Recalls Elizabeth, “I said, ‘Hell yeah!’ I mean, you don’t turn down an opportunity like that!”

Elizabeth believes that her compositions find their success in engaging the viewer with organizational complexity while simultaneously entertaining with whimsy.

“I definitely think there is a Warholian influence within my works,” she says. “My works are very much pop art and very decorative.”

Although she has been influenced by many different pop artists, she also draws inspiration from artists outside of the genre, including Frank Stella, Ellsworth Kelly, and Gene Davis.

“The symmetry and the color behind their works is very inspiring,” she says. “For me, color equates to happiness.”

Elizabeth also talks about the business side of being a professional artist, and how many established artists have helped her develop her career.

“Nobody’s going to help you unless you ask for it. Nothing’s going to be handed to you. I’m always asking people who I admire, people who are successful, to give me advice… People who owe me nothing have helped me,” she says. “I’ve had many young artists reach out to me, asking how to get started. You need to be willing to give what you get. Anybody who I can help, who I can inspire… I answer every single message, every email.”

“It’s very important to also remember the business elements of the art world if you want to succeed,” she says.
